This presentation reviews how chronic urinary catheterization fundamentally changes the urinary tract system and leads to the development of catheter bacterial colonization and discusses how biofilm and encrustation leads to clogging. Bedside techniques to evaluate chronic clogging, differential diagnosis of clogged catheters, and the appropriate use of antibiotics and other medications used to treat chronic clogging are discussed. Common interventions used to manage chronic clogging are discussed, along with how to develop a nursing care plan tailored for the particular type of organism causing the clogging.
