Asymptomatic microscopic hematuria (AMH) is a common finding and has been considered an important clinical sign of urinary tract malignancy. The definition and guidelines of AMH have changed over the years. Much of the evidence is based on data from male patients and the risk of urinary tract malignancy may be less in women than in men. Women specific conditions may lead to increased incidence of AMH. Likewise, primary care providers appear not to refer many women with AMH. We review guidelines and consider how recent evidence is changing practice.
