Antibiotic resistance is one of the greatest public health threats. Approximately 2 million people become sick each year with antibiotic resistant infections and the costs associated with antibiotic resistance are rising. Inappropriate and indiscriminate use of antibiotics has led to fewer options for providers. This presentation discusses antibiotic stewardship and how it is linked to infection prevention. It also discusses the core principles of stewardship, common overly prescribed antibiotics and antibiotic stewardship programs.
