The definitions of asymptomatic bacteruria, simple UTI, complicated UTI and interpreting urine cultures will be discussed. The risk factors associated with UTIs and asymptomatic bacteruria will be presented through case studies. Current standards are discussed including definition, causes, and treatments. CAUTI is briefly touched upon. Bacteria resistance patterns, rationale and treatments are also discussed as well as current research and evidence- based practice. The presentation ends with a discussion of specific nursing interventions to promote urologic health in this group with an emphasis on minimal intervention and optimizing quality of life.
