213 - Osteoporosis: Prevention and Treatment in Men Receiving Androgen Deprivation Therapy

Description

Men with prostate cancer are increasingly undergoing long term androgen deprivation therapy ADT. One side effect of ADT is a significant decline in bone mineral density. The annual rate of bone loss during ADT is as high as 9.6%; with the greatest decrease noted in the first year of 3-5.6%. Osteoporosis is a silent disease and is responsible for more than 1.5 million fractures annually with over 300;000 being hip fractures. This session provides the attendee with a knowledge base regarding osteoporosis; appropriate screening with DXA scans; how to interpret the DXA; preventative health counseling regarding Calcium and Vitamin D supplements; exercise and a review of the prescriptive medications used to treat osteoporosis and osteopenia.
