Urinary tract infections (UTIs) account for nearly seven million office visits and one million emergency department visits annually, at a cost of over one billion dollars. Almost half of all women will experience one UTI during their lifetime and yet over 50% of symptomatic women do not have culture documented UTIs. UTIs are over diagnosed and over treated, contributing to the increasing trend of bacterial resistance. Updated simple UTI guidelines, antibiotic resistance, and alternative management will be discussed.

Dysuria is prevalent in 3% of adults 40 years and older and is responsible for over 8 million office visits and 2 million ER visits. Although the typical causes for dysuria are acute cystitis, there are many other less common diagnoses and etiologies. The objectives for this case study presentation include understanding the risk factors for dysuria, being knowledgeable of the spectrum of differential diagnoses, and understanding the role of pelvic floor physical therapy.

British Association of Urological Nurses (BAUN) members now regularly undertake diagnostic flexible cystoscopies, ureteric stent removal, biopsy, and laser ablation. Nurses also are performing intradetrusor botulinum toxin A injections using a flexible cystoscope. The presenter will share the “Salford experience” of setting up a nurse led clinic. The session will describe the rationale, stages, and key considerations necessary to set up the service and share the findings of the Patient Satisfaction Audit following implementation.
