Type 2 diabetes has long been associated with upper urinary tract or renal dysfunction. However, there is also an association with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and bladder dysfunction. LUTS can result in economic and quality of life burden on women. In addition, unmanaged LUTS and bladder dysfunction can result in harmful complications leading to upper urinary tract impairment. This presentation reviews the effect of type 2 diabetes on lower urinary tract function and provides nurses and advance practice providers with non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic management strategies to optimize bladder function and reduce complications in this population.
