The involuntary loss of gas or stool can be an embarrassing and socially isolating condition. It affects an estimated 17 million Americans, and its prevalence is increasing as the population ages. An understanding of the causes, evaluation, and treatment are of paramount importance when faced with patients suffering from these symptoms. This lecture provides an overview of the mechanism of continence and outline the approach to patients suffering with fecal incontinence.
