This presentation addresses the gap that exists in transitioning pediatric urology patients to adult urology patients; more specifically in recognizing that adolescents with genitourinary issues have the same need for sex education and information regarding sexuality topics as their peers. The issue of sexuality in these patients is often overlooked, in favor of managing their urologic conditions, and due to the fact that they are considered pediatric patients. A review of the pertinent fertility and sexual function issues inherent with common pediatric GU diagnoses is presented. The session concludes with discussion of established factors that are influential in relaying sexuality information to adolescents. Strategies for teaching parents the importance of addressing sexuality topics with their teens are presented.
