The purpose of this presentation is to help participants gain a better understanding of the role of evidence-based practice to improving patient outcomes, particularly for patients with continence and pelvic floor disorders. Various “Levels of Evidence” (LOE), including the seven levels identified by Polit and Beck (2012), as well as specific studies representing those LOE are discussed. The use of LOEs in Urologic Nursing is explained. By the end of the presentation, healthcare providers will be able to identify a problem or need, assess the evidence in published literature, develop an intervention, and evaluate the outcome in order to provide care that integrates sound research evidence into practice.
