Incontinence is a serious medical and healthcare issue that affects millions of people worldwide and continues to have an enormous stigma attached to it. Despite its high prevalence, QOL impact and socio-economic implications, incontinence remains a low priority in worldwide health and social care. This presentation presents a summary of the Global Forum on Incontinence held in Madrid, Spain, April 8-9, 2014 where policymakers from 33 countries, speaking 11 languages, got together to discuss incontinence.

Use of mesh material for pelvic floor reconstruction is a controversial and poorly understood treatment option by both patients and clinicians. This lecture enables the clinician to better understand the benefits and risks of mesh as well as the history of mesh materials. Discussion is also provided regarding the FDA classification of mesh products and the future for mesh in pelvic floor reconstructive surgery.

Urinary incontinence affects women of all ages, including top female athletes, but is often under-reported. The highest prevalence of urinary incontinence is reported in those participating in high impact sports and activities. During this presentation, we discuss the prevalence, risk factors, pathophysiology and treatment modalities of urinary incontinence in physically active women and female athletes.

In the pediatric urology population we see many school-aged and adolescent girls who come in complaining of incontinence. Their stories and symptoms vary tremendously. How do you manage stress incontinence in the athlete, true giggle incontinence, incontinence in the obese individual? These are some of the situations that are discussed. Evidence-based research and treatment modalities are presented along with the role of the APRN.
