Advanced Practice Prostate Ultrasound Workshop

This course is designed for advanced practice nurses and physician assistants who will begin to perform prostate ultrasound. Using both lecture and hands-on teaching strategies, participants will gain knowledge in recognizing and evaluating normal and abnormal prostate anatomy through ultrasound images.

Requirements for Successful Completion:

  • Identify the basic principles of ultrasound including image generation and safety concerns.
  • Recognize normal prostate anatomy using ultrasound.
  • Contrast normal anatomy with common abnormal pathologic findings using ultrasound.
  • Identify important patient safety considerations during prostate ultrasound.
  • Outline indications for prostate biopsy/ gold marker placement and proper ultrasound biopsy needle guide placement. 
  • Position transrectal probe correctly to visualize quality prostate and seminal vesicle images in the transverse and sagital planes.
  • Identify normal prostate and seminal vesicle anatomy using ultrasound images.
  • Accurately measure the prostate volume using a transrectal approach.
  • Discuss patient preparation, comfort and safety considerations during the procedure as outlined in the 2012 AUA/ SUNA white paper.
  • Identify prostate pathology.
  • Discuss prostate biopsy procedure.
