The types of urinary catheters used in a community or home care setting and the advantages and disadvantages of each type of catheter will be described. Research evidence and evidence-based practice guidelines for managing care of patients with long-term urinary catheters will be reviewed and methods and resources for minimizing sediment and infections (CAUTIs) in patients with long-term catheter placement will be discussed.
