Do you ever wish you had a step-by-step guide for evaluating patients with LUTS? This presentation guides the urology RN/APP in performing a thorough history and physical exam of the patient presenting with LUTS including but not limited to OAB, voiding dysfunction, and irritative voiding symptoms. Use of a bladder diary, pad weight, and uroflow is discussed. Physical exam including post void residual, prolapse exam and evaluation of the pelvic floor muscles is addressed. Treatment algorithms are provided including behavior modification for patients with OAB. Case studies are reviewed.

Type 2 diabetes has long been associated with upper urinary tract or renal dysfunction. However, there is also an association with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and bladder dysfunction. LUTS can result in economic and quality of life burden on women. In addition, unmanaged LUTS and bladder dysfunction can result in harmful complications leading to upper urinary tract impairment. This presentation reviews the effect of type 2 diabetes on lower urinary tract function and provides nurses and advance practice providers with non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic management strategies to optimize bladder function and reduce complications in this population.

Neurological diseases affecting the central nervous system also tend to influence lower urinary function. Historically referred to as neurogenic bladder dysfunction, neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) is affected by the nature of the underlying neurological disorder, the patient’s age and sex, and other factors. The role and clinical utility of urodynamic testing in NLUTD associated with Parkinson Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke and Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias are presented.
