This presentation details the series of escalating safety actions by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from 2008 to the present related to use of surgical mesh intended for transvaginal repair of pelvic organ prolapse. Many questions arise and are explored, including: Might regulations change again in light of emerging availability of post market surveillance studies ("522 Studies") and new randomized controlled trials? Most importantly, how should we be counseling our patients moving forward?

Advanced prostate cancer treatments continue to evolve with new treatments in the M0CRPC, such as daralutamide and apalutamide, precision treatments based on genetic testing including PARP inhibitors and PD1 immunotherapy. Genetic testing is helping to guide treatment and identify high risk familial genetic traits to help identify appropriate screening for family members. This presentation covers these topics and new breakthroughs.

Both Electrical Stimulation (E-stim), vaginal and anal, and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) are discussed. Use of E-stim for urinary and fecal incontinence, urinary retention, constipation, pelvic pain, and sexual dysfunction are explored. Indications, contraindications, and evidence are presented from literature review. Different types of PTNS are explored and discussed (Labori, Medtronic vs. generic TENS).

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) introduced the concept of prevention as an important priority for women's urologic research as a prelude to supporting the formation of the Prevention of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (PLUS) research consortium. Phase 1 of the PLUS consortium is now complete, and this presentation shares the goals and outcomes of completed research projects, highlighting their relevance to urologic nursing.
