Hands-on Potpourri for Clinical Urology Nurses

This preconference is tailored for nurses and associates who are relatively new to the field of urology or those who feel they need a refresher. This workshop will provide information regarding urologic prosthetics, handling cysto equipment, ostomy, pessary facts and fitting, and catheter review. Hands-on instruction will be provided on proper set up and assisting in cystoscopic examinations. Choosing the proper type and size of urinary catheters to be used in varied situations will be discussed and proper placement reviewed. The proper care of urostomies and catheterization of urostomies will be demonstrated. Special care and consideration, as well as proper placement of pessaries will be demonstrated and practiced on site. Lastly, adequate functioning and troubleshooting of urologic prosthetics, including artificial urinary sphincters and inflatable prosthesis will be practiced. This session will be valuable to those nurses and associates in the inpatient as well as the outpatient urology setting.

  • Name the most common prosthetics used in a urology setting.
  • List 4 complications that may be encountered following urologic prosthetic surgery.
  • List the different catheters.
