Shalyn Vanderbloemen MPAS, PA-C, MBA-HCM began her career as a Physician Associate in 2009 working in the Department of Surgery in the Chicago area. In 2017 she felt compelled to work exclusively with the LGBTQ+ population and took a position with leading Gender Affirming Surgical providers in Chicago. During this time, she received a Master of Business focused on Health Care Management from Loyola University in Chicago, focusing her capstone project on a multi-disciplinary approach LGBTQ+ care. After completing her MBA, she took a position as Lead Advanced Practice Provider at Vanderbilt University Medical Center specializing in Gender Affirmation Surgery. Her clinical and research interests include developments and practices surrounding Gender Dysphoria in the disciplines of Gender Affirming Surgery. Shalyn is a member of the World Professional Association on Transgender Health and the American Academy of Physician Assistants.
Ms. Vanderbloemen’s primary focus includes protocols for Gender Affirming Surgery and peri-operative care, including instituting hormonal protocols. Further research interests include the development and inclusion of pelvic floor physical therapy and its role in Gender Affirming Surgery. Among her contributions in peer-reviewed publications are Establishing Venous Thromboembolism Guidelines for Vaginoplasty, presented at The World Professional Association for Transgender Health 25th Scientific Symposium; Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy following Vaginoplasty for Gender Confirmation, presented at World Professional Association for Transgender Health 25th Scientific Symposium; Establishing Guidelines for Gender Confirmation Surgery: the Perioperative Risk of Asymptomatic Deep Venous Thrombosis for Vaginoplasty, presented at 14th Congress of the European Federation of Societies for Microsurgery.
