After obtaining his medical degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1988, Dr. Jens Sønksen earned a Ph.D. (1995) and Doctor of Medical Science (2003) degrees for his work on infertility of spinal cord injured males. He completed his urology training at Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen. During his training he spent one year in a Male Infertility fellowship at the University of Michigan, USA. He is currently Chair Professor of Urology at University of Copenhagen and Head of Urological Research Center, Herlev & Gentofte Hospital, Denmark.
Based on Dr. Sønksen’s research the first home medical vibration device for nerve induction of ejaculation in spinal cord injured men was developed and this device is currently in use in more than 30 countries worldwide. Dr. Sønksen’s clinical research includes ejaculatory and erectile dysfunction, male infertility, lower urinary tract dysfunction as well as urological cancers. He has published more than 150 scientific papers and book chapters and serves as co-editor of the Scandinavian Journal of Urology as well as international reviewer in several scientific journals.
Dr. Sønksen has planned and directed numerous international urological meetings as well as faculty courses and is a member of several boards and societies in Urology. He has served as Secretary General of the European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM) from 2010-2013. In 2016 he was elected as President of the Danish Association of Urology and in 2017 he was elected as Adjunct Secretary General of the European Association of Urology (EAU).
